Computer Training Center
The CTC was started in 2005 with capital investment support from IBM. This centre imparts basic and advanced computer usability skills to persons with all kinds of visual disability (people with low vision to people who have absolutely no vision.) This training is provided through the use of Non Visual Desktop Access or NVDA which is a free screen reading software that enables blind and vision impaired people to use computers. It reads the text on the screen in a computerized voice.
The user can control what is read to him/her by moving the cursor to the relevant area of text with a mouse or the arrows on the keyboard. NVDA provides the key to education and employment for many blind people.
Three courses are conducted during a year. This encompasses two batches of the ‘Basic Computer Training’ and one batch of the ‘Advanced Computer Training’. Weekly and monthly tests are conducted to gauge the students and suitably modify lessons to ensure effectiveness of training. Course completion certificates are provided by Mitra Jyothi upon successful completion of the course
Food and accommodation is provided by Mitra Jyothi during the entire duration of the course for all the students. A nominal fee of Rs. 1000/- per month is charged to the students. The rest of the necessary funds are collected through large and small donors. More than 900 individuals have so far been trained in the CTC at Mitra Jyothi since its inception.
