Education Resource Centre
The Education Resource Centre supports the education of people with vision impairment by providing them accessible reading material. “Accessible Reading Material” means books in the form of eText, ePub, DAISY (audio), mp3 and Braille formats.
Independent Living Skills
Independent Living Skills is the most fundamental hands-on program at Mitra Jyothi that enables persons with visual disability to initiate self-reliance and instills confidence in them. It is a residential 4-6 month life-skill training program that was started in 1997 and is running successfully since its inception.
Computer Training Centre
The Computer Training Centre imparts basic and advanced computer literacy training to visually impaired students, from those with low vision to those who are totally blind. This training is provided through the use of Non Visual Desktop Access or NVDA which is a free screen reading software that enables people with vision impairment to use computers.
Placement Cell
The Placement Cell provides job placement assistance to people with various disabilities including people with orthopedic disabilities, speech and hearing impairment and vision impairment. Providing the necessary grooming, soft skill training and logistical support are some of the holistic readiness support provided by this cell.
Women Empowerment
With a focus on women empowerment, Mitra Jyothi has set up the “Centre for Empowerment of Women with Disabilities” in Electronics City, Bangalore. CEWD is a state-of-the-art disabled-friendly, safe and secure accommodation for working women with disabilities. It is a full-fledged hostel facility available for working/studying women with any kind of physical disabilities. The success stories of each of these residents is an inspiration to all. Their raise from abject poverty and dependence to a life of not only being financially self-sufficient but in a position to support their families back home, bring our vision and mission to life!
Building Awareness
For true inclusivity of people with disabilities in mainstream society, the society needs to have a conducive environment that nurtures and builds awareness in the minds of one and all. For such awareness to be built, it needs to start in young minds. At Mitra Jyothi awareness sessions are conducted to sensitize school & college students/organizations/general public about interacting with people with disabilities.
Collaborative Projects
Mitra Jyothi works in partnership with other NGOs to reach out to more and more people in need and collaborates its efforts to maximize effectiveness of programs. Mitra Jyothi is a key contributor of books to Sugamya Pustakalaya.
